President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. promised to assert territorial sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea during his State of the Nation Address on Monday, July 22.

“Ang West Philippine Sea ay hindi kathang-isip lamang, ito ay atin.” he proudly proclaimed.

His statement was shortly followed by echoing cheers and applause in the session hall.

Tensions have been rising between the Philippine and Chinese Coast Guards, with confrontations dating back to the early 2010s. Recent escalations have led to injuries, including a Filipino marine losing a finger.

“We are continuing in strengthening our defensive posture. Both with developing self-reliance and through partnerships with like-minded states,” he said.

International bodies like the European Union and United Nations have expressed support for the Philippines.

"The Philippines cannot yield, the Philippines cannot waver." Marcos said.

The President also promised to enhance the country’s aerial and maritime domain awareness and educate future generations on the importance of protecting the country's territory.
