This cleanup was part of the 35th International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day, which aims to raise awareness on marine pollution and promote the protection of coastal ecosystems.

The event’s theme, "Clean Seas for Blue Economy," not only focused on reducing immediate pollution but also stressed the need for sustainable waste management in the long run.

In Pasay City, DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga and Atty. Michael Drake Matias, OIC Regional Executive Director for DENR-National Capital Region, led the cleanup efforts at SM by the Bay.

Similar activities were held in different regions, from Pasuquin in Ilocos to Gian in Soccsksargen.

“Today, we witnessed an extraordinary display of support and dedication from Filipinos committed to our environment. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the International Coastal Cleanup in the Philippines, we reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding our coastal resources and promoting sustainable practices to protect our marine ecosystems,” Loyzaga said.

The data gathered from this cleanup will be used to analyze the types of waste affecting the country’s waters and coastlines, guiding future conservation efforts.

As the campaign continues, the DENR urges all Filipinos to remember that the fight against marine pollution does not end with a one-day cleanup.

"We are thrilled to see such a large turnout today. This event not only highlights the urgent need to protect our coastlines but also showcases the commitment of our communities to work together for a cleaner, healthier environment," Matias added.

With over 18 million volunteers having participated globally in the ICC over the past 35 years, the Philippines has been an active participant since 1994, with a commitment to annual cleanups through Presidential Proclamation No. 470.
