On October 28 2024, a Facebook page dedicated to glorifying President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. shared a post asserting that disaster management has improved under BBM, highlighting early government announcements regarding Typhoon Kristine as proof of a more effective response compared to previous administrations.
CLAIM: The post insists that the Marcos administration's swift response minimized the impact of Typhoon Kristine, boasting fewer damages and deaths than previous administrations.
RATING: FALSE
CONCLUSION: Typhoon Kristine caused ₱4.36 billion in damages and killed at least 116 people, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). The supposed effectiveness of the government’s actions was, in fact, inadequate.
The spread of this disinformation is not limited to Typhoon Kristine. The post also misrepresented damages from other typhoons.
Typhoon Yolanda was said to have caused ₱76.46 billion in damage and a death toll of 6,300. However, the NDRRMC confirms that actual damages were only ₱39.82 billion, with a death count of 6,293.
Tropical Storm Ondoy’s damages were inflated to ₱68.23 billion and 464 fatalities, while the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported that the actual damage was just ₱8.3 billion, with 335 confirmed deaths.
Typhoon Odette was claimed to have caused over ₱203 billion in damage, but official figures reveal only ₱24.5 billion and a death toll of 407.
Lastly, Severe Tropical Storm Kristine is intentionally misrepresented, with claims of just ₱825 million in damage and 90 fatalities. In reality, the NDRRMC reports total damages of ₱4.36 billion and at least 116 deaths.
