New DepEd project on AI to initially launch this year

The Department of Education’s project Accelerating Governance and Adaptive Pedagogy through Artificial Intelligence (Project AGAP.AI) was announced to launch in phases this year.

Last Jan. 10, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. spoke at the launch of the Department of Education’s AI literacy initiative.

The president called for the integration of artificial intelligence concepts into the basic education curriculum, saying early exposure to AI would help learners understand and responsibly use emerging technologies.

DepEd is said to roll out a national AI skills training program that will reach up to 1.5 million Filipinos, including learners, teachers, and parents.

This will cover topics of responsible use, detecting misinformation, privacy and security, and AI literacy.

“DepEd is working closely with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education, and Day of AI to integrate AI concepts into the curriculum,” Marcos said.

Marcos added that this AGAP.AI is to better prepare Filipino students for a technology-driven future.

Project AGAP.AI is the flagship program for all Artificial Intelligence (Al) initiatives.

The project is aimed to be rolled out as part of the national curriculum by the second quarter, according to Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara.
