Alone but not lonely

There is something about being alone in public,
Something that bothers some people.
A table for one becomes awkward;
A single seat turns into a question mark.

Eyes linger a little too long,
As if solitude must mean something is missing,
As if choosing yourself
Is the strangest choice of all.

I grew up believing moments must be shared,
That laughter sounds brighter inside a crowd,
That food feels warmer with someone beside me,
And memories matter more when another heart sees them.

But sometimes being alone is not loneliness;
It is a gentle relief,
A small pause where I stop waiting
For someone else to show up for me.

Sometimes being alone is stepping away
From the noise of deadlines and expectations,
A quiet escape from the world
That keeps asking for more.

It is a small pause carved out of busy days,
A moment where nothing is required,
Where I am not needed by anyone
But myself.

So this time, I went anyway.
I dressed up to go out with myself,
To enjoy my own company,
And to do the things I liked.

I sat at the table alone,
Not hiding, not explaining,
Letting the silence breathe beside me
Without calling it awkward.

I ordered what I wanted.
I ate slowly.
I let the moment unfold
Without needing to share it.

Being alone, I realized,
Is not emptiness;
It is space—
Space where I can hear myself again.

If a table for one looks lonely,
Let it.
I know what it holds.

It holds someone who no longer abandons themselves
Just because the seat beside them is empty,
And that is not loneliness—
That is strength.

Learning to sit comfortably
In their own presence,
Finding peace in quiet moments,
And choosing oneself, again and again.
