MISLEADING: CICC suggests Facebook Ban

A post by YugaTech on Facebook is garnering interactions after posting about an article about a news that the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) is suggesting for a total Facebook ban.

Following that, another post from a netizen was found to be asking opinions about the CICC’s article about a Facebook ban.

CLAIM:

The posts show that the CICC is suggesting a Facebook Ban to the government. In which the netizen poster also added in their caption,

“Agree or Disagree: A Total Facebook Ban?” Implying that the ban is impending.

RATING: MISLEADING

CONCLUSION:

The posts may be factually correct about the CICC’s study about the possible recommendation for a Facebook ban in the country, wordings and implications suggest that the Facebook ban is ‘final’ or impending.

THE FACTS:

  • The improper wordings of both posters of YugaTech and the netizen may have caused panic due to the definitive language used in captions and headlines.
  • The CICC is only studying the possibility, no ban is being implemented.

THE BOTTOMLINE:

Contrary to implications of posts online that a Facebook ban is imminent in our country, the policy is not yet present nor created. The CICC is only studying the recommendation, and is yet to make a verdict if it is worth it to recommend for a policy or not.
