DepEd considers makeup classes amid continuous class cancellations

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara on July 22 eyes the implementation of makeup classes to fill the learning losses brought upon by the cancellation of classes due to weather disturbances.

In the current draft of the proposed setup, makeup classes will be conducted every Saturday or after class hours, depending on the availability of the teachers.

“There must be makeup classes as the learning loss is really high. Our learners are affected when there are many cancellations (of classes),” Angara said.

Angara also clarified that class suspensions should be issued by the Local Government Units (LGUs) based on the current situation and real-time local conditions. 

However, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla, on the other hand, cites and emphasizes the importance of both DepEd and LGUs’ decisions in issuing independent suspension announcements.

According to Remulla, Angara also has the faculty to suspend classes, alongside the LGUs, when unprecedented weather conditions occur.

Recently, the DILG secretary was authorized by Malacañang to deliver announcements of the suspension of work and classes in the affected areas.

DepEd is still working on the final structure of the proposition, vowing to alleviate the learning loss amid the cancellation of classes.
