ABS-CBN Corp. and GMA Network Inc. reported improved financial results for this year, highlighting the change in television trends as the public shifts towards digital content and steady traditional broadcast operations.

Analysts say the contrast between ABS-CBN’s recovery and GMA’s profit growth shows distinct paths between the networks following the viewer trends and behavior.

ABS-CBN is currently leaning on digital distribution, partnerships, and global content exposure, particularly through successful music groups and film releases.

The broadcast company’s total revenue reached P11.75 billion, a 3 percent drop from last year, despite the lack of a free TV franchise.

ABS-CBN cut its net loss to P2.24 billion due to the content production and distribution segment with a boost to P9.13 billion, 14 percent higher, from primetime shows such as “Batang Quiapo,” “Incognito,” “Saving Grace,” “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” and “TV Patrol” and revenues.

GMA Network, on the other hand, continues to benefit from its dominance in free-to-air television, even as it gradually expands investments in digital platforms.

Their net income peaked with a total of P2.07 billion, 47 percent higher compared to previous years, signifying the continuous traditional broadcast operations with a loyal free-TV audience.

The company’s total revenue also increased by 12 percent to P13.99 billion from advertising, programming, and other media segments, sustaining profitability and content expansion.
