The Philippines is expanding its position in the global healthcare outsourcing industry, with more than 200,000 remote professionals providing services in clinical documentation, medical billing, and telehealth.
New York-based financial technology company Payoneer noted that the country’s workforce, together with its robust compliance standards and cost-efficient operations, is driving its role up in the sector.
“The Philippines is becoming a global health technology outsourcing powerhouse, thanks to its skilled workforce, strong compliance standards, and cost-effective operations,” said Monique Avila, senior director of customer success for Asia-Pacific at Payoneer.
Citing data from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Payoneer stated that the country is moving away from traditional business process outsourcing (BPO) toward higher-value industries such as healthcare information management services.
The medical billing outsourcing segment generated $4.2 billion in 2024 and is projected to expand by nine percent annually through 2028.
It is further projected to reach $30.2 billion by 2030, while the telehealth market is expected to grow to $455 billion in the same period.
However, its rapid growth also presents operational challenges as companies must meet rising demand while addressing compliance, workforce quality, cost efficiency, and reliable cross-border payment systems.
Global Medical Virtual Assistants (GMVA), a company that links American-based healthcare providers with Filipino professionals, cited payment issues as a key concern.
“You shouldn’t have to work to get your money when you’re working. Our people need to focus on their patients, not on whether they’ll receive their money on time,” said Michelle DiClemente, accounting manager of GMVA.
Before adopting Payoneer, GMVA faced difficulties with cross-border transaction fees, high maintenance balance requirements, and delays in payments.
With new systems in place, its staff are now able to receive earnings in multiple currencies, withdraw to local banks, and access funds more quickly.
“We’re growing significantly and will continue to grow, so it’s important that we invest in tools that support our scalability,” said Mary Grace Avelino, GMVA general manager.
As the sector continues to grow, Payoneer said secure and efficient payment systems will remain crucial in sustaining the Philippines’ role in the global healthcare outsourcing industry.
