Philippine Geriatric Center Act gets Senate nod

A specialized hospital and care center dedicated to senior citizens will soon be established as the Senate unanimously approved on Monday, Feb. 2, the Senate Bill No. 1509, also known as the Philippine Geriatric Center (PGC) Act, on its third and final reading.

Senator Risa Hontiveros, who authored and sponsored the said act, said that it was more than just to address the increasing healthcare demands of the Filipino elderly.

“It is about honoring our elders, our grandfathers and grandmothers who raised us, guided us, and kept our families close. It is about ensuring that they live longer, healthier lives with dignity and access to care,” she said.

Senate Bill 1509 was approved with all 23 senators voting in favor and no negative votes or abstentions, after Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri moved for its consideration on third reading.

The proposed measure aims to establish a medical facility for the elderly, providing long-term care, rehabilitation, palliative services, and treatment for common chronic illnesses.

It will also serve as a teaching and training hospital for healthcare professionals, social workers, and community volunteers specializing in geriatric care.

The PGC is expected to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and well-organized for senior citizens across the country.

The bill aims to set up a complete geriatric care system by creating the PGC under the supervision of the Department of Health (DOH).
