Preparations for the 2027 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup shifted into full gear after organizers officially unveiled its tournament logo on July 8, with the newly opened SM Seaside Cebu Arena set to host the historic event in July 2027.
The logo launch, held during a press conference at SM Seaside Cebu, formally introduced Cebu as the tournament host to the first-ever FIBA Women’s Asia Cup to be staged in the Philippines.
The eight-day tilt will bring together 16 of Asia’s top women’s national teams, including Gilas Pilipinas Women, which earned an automatic berth in Division A as the host nation after retaining its place in the continent’s top tier.
Meanwhile, the tournament also serves as a qualifying pathway toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“We’re very excited about it. It’s a premier event of FIBA. I know SBP has hosted other FIBA events in the past, but not yet in Cebu City and not yet in the women’s division,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Executive Director Erika Dy.
Dy also called on Cebuanos to support the tournament, saying the event is an opportunity for the city to showcase its passion for basketball to the rest of Asia.
“Sana i-embrace ng mga Cebuano ang pag-host namin ng event na ito. I hope Cebu takes ownership and throws its support not just behind the Philippine team but all the teams coming here,” she said.
Representatives from SBP, Philippine Sports Commission, Cebu’s Sports Commission, SM Supermalls, SM Mall of Asia Arena and SM Seaside Cebu, SBP Board of Trustees were present to grace the ceremony.
The SM Seaside Cebu Arena, which seats around 16,000 spectators for sporting events and up to 25,000 for full-capacity configurations, was built to accommodate world-class competitions.
It is also expected to welcome thousands of athletes, officials, and basketball fans from across the region.
