Piastri stuns Spa with Sprint pole as title fight tightens

Oscar Piastri delivered a statement of intent under Spa’s shifting skies on Friday, July 25 (10:30 PM Philippine time) clinching Sprint pole with a blistering 1:40.510 — 0.418s clear of Max Verstappen, as McLaren reignited its title charge at the iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Stavelot, Wallonia, Belgium.

Rebounding from the sting of Silverstone, the Australian kept his cool despite a fraught Sprint Qualifying 2 (SQ2), where a deleted banker at Raidillon nearly derailed his campaign.

Scraping through by a wafer-thin 0.041s, Piastri responded with clinical precision in SQ3, unleashing a final sector that left the paddock in awe.

Red Bull’s Verstappen, navigating his first Grand Prix weekend in two decades without Christian Horner at the helm, slotted into second. 

Just behind came championship protagonist Lando Norris, sealing a McLaren two-three that underscores the team’s upward trajectory.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc led the second row in P4, while Esteban Ocon stunned the field with a season-best P5 for Haas — a rare high for the American outfit amid an otherwise turbulent campaign.

Carlos Sainz, continuing his late-season renaissance, hauled his Williams to P6, edging out Haas rookie Oliver Bearman and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in a midfield reshuffle that upended the expected order.

Rounding out the surprise top ten were Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar and Sauber debutant Gabriel Bortoleto, capitalizing on chaos as several marquee names faltered.

Mercedes endured a nightmare session. 

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton spun at the Bus Stop chicane on his final SQ1 flyer, ending up a distant 18th.

Teammate George Russell bowed out in SQ2, stranded in 13th, while rookie Kimi Antonelli propped up the timesheets in P20 after battling brake issues and a costly off.

Earlier, Piastri had topped the sole Friday practice, setting the tone for a high-pressure qualifying where margins were razor-thin. 

Both McLarens went early in SQ2 to lock in banker laps, but Piastri’s initial time was scrubbed for track limits triggering a tense waiting game as the field shuffled.

Verstappen briefly took control before Norris laid down a 1:41.412. 

Piastri, however, kept his nerve, his second flyer, just enough to squeeze into SQ3.

Further down the order, Aston Martin endured another subdued outing, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll marooned in 14th and 15th respectively.

Red Bull juniors Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda narrowly missed SQ3, outqualified by Hadjar in a breakout showing. 

Albon, Hülkenberg, and Colapinto were early exits.

Despite the tension, Piastri’s final lap was inch-perfect, earning him the top spot and a vital edge in Saturday’s 15-lap dash for championship points.
