Guimaras mangoes hit Europe, Hong Kong markets as DA sharpens global push

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has deployed a fresh batch of Guimaras mangoes to premium markets in Europe and Hong Kong to expand the global marketability of Philippine agriculture.

On June 9, the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) facilitated the export of 200 kilograms of fresh mangoes from Kokomojo Mango Farm in Sibunag, Guimaras.

The shipment allocated 100 kilograms to Hong Kong and 50 kilograms each to the Netherlands and Belgium.

The European consignments will land in Brussels as promotional “patikim” samples for prospective buyers and industry stakeholders.

Meanwhile, diplomats and distinguished guests will receive the Hong Kong shipment during the 127th Philippine Independence Day celebrations to showcase local agricultural excellence.

To meet the strict international food safety and plant health regulations, the BPI provided essential laboratory and regulatory services, including maximum residue limit testing and phytosanitary certification.

In an official statement, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the financial importance of the initiative.

“Every new export market we open creates opportunities not only for our farmers but also for workers involved in processing, logistics, packaging, and distribution,” he said.

Laurel further explained that expanding the country’s reach in the global market is critical to help boost the income of local farmers and generate more jobs across the agricultural value chain.

“Expanding market access allows our producers to secure better prices, increase incomes, and invest in improving productivity, helping drive inclusive growth in rural communities,” he said.
