Well, wonder no more as that wishful thinking has been finally answered by the IV of Spades. After the five-year-long hiatus (that felt like an eternity for fans), IV of Spades has not just returned; they’ve exploded back onto the music industry by dropping the bomb — “Aura”, a new single that landed without a whisper of warning or teaser, catching their fans in excitement and disbelief. 

The biggest plot twist? It’s the much-anticipated official return of their beloved vocalist and guitarist, Unique Salonga. 

Unique’s finally home!

The void left by Unique Salonga’s departure on May 4, 2018, was palpable, leaving a wake of devastated fans. The official announcement, citing his pursuit of “personal endeavors,” struck many unexpectedly. Later that same year, Salonga embarked on a solo journey, releasing his debut single “Midnight Sky” and the album “Grandma” under O/C Records, showcasing his solo career.

Now, after seven years of fans yearning for the full-member reunion, they finally broke the silence by surprisingly dropping their new single track, which, for fans, isn’t just a new song; it’s once again hearing their perfect dynamic that many believed was lost to time. A sound of a band, and a brotherhood, made whole again. 

With Unique rejoining vocalist and bassist Zild Benitez, vocalist and guitarist Blaster Silonga, and drummer Badjao De Castro, the original lineup is finally complete once more, and their collective “Aura” now fully restored and radiating.

Being known for their unique blend of indie-funk hitmakers, such as “Mundo” and “Hey Barbara,” they’ve introduced a fresh flavor, a coat of paint that feels both familiar and entirely new. To experience the new title track is to feel its lyricism cut through the noise not with a shout, but with a quiet, yet piercing realization: that no matter how overwhelming life becomes, we constantly search for one, unwavering constant presence, that person whose absence leaves the loudest echo.

Beyond the obvious surface of a lover’s plea for longing and coming home, “Aura” delves into something far more intricate. In its deeper currents, the song quietly examines the disorienting haze of a clouded mind and the pervasive weight of emotional exhaustion. As for Zee, 18, one of their casual listeners, she describes the new track as such “a breath of fresh air, and it really had a nostalgic feel to it.” 

She also added, “There’s always something about IVOS that makes you want to keep on listening. Something they’re great at is their strong musicality and lyricism that really gives them their branding, making it just as iconic and recognizable as their old works.”

This entire masterpiece powerfully explores the profound idea of defining what home truly is. While never explicitly pointing to a physical place, the lyrics subtly hint at home being found, not in an address, but in the cherished, grounding presence of a beloved connection.

Fans notice a shift in sound

“If i-compare ko yung Aura sa previous songs nila, more mellow yung vibe ng kanta,” observes JC, a 22-year-old avid fan. “Parang gusto nilang iparating na starting fresh sila since ayon nagka-hiatus sila.”

This sentiment resonates deeply, hinting at a new chapter not just for the band but potentially for their listeners’ playlists.

“Ang saya lang pakinggan uli ng music nila ang nostalgic since dati more on loud music ginagawa nila like parang sumisigaw ‘yong music na tinutugtog nila. Tapos ngayon ‘yong new release na kanta sarap sa pakiramdam pakinggan, parang maalala mo lahat luma nilang song habang pinapakinggan yon,” their fan for six years, JC stated.

There’s also a viral post on X that seems to be relatable for many supporters, which states: “suddenly I’m 19 again, up at 12 am studying with my friends before completely giving up and going out to drink instead, blasting ivos, sud and autotelic. aaaahhhh i miss life before we had to grow up.”
