Yearning is our favorite hobby

Zee Healy

You were actually too good to be true–

At least for someone who used to settle for less

I didn’t know I could pull you

Not because I see you as someone so mighty;

But more because.. Who would’ve liked someone so chaotic as me?

I still feel so giddy when I remember our first conversations

I knew how hard you were trying to resist and make it as friendly as possible

Well oh well, I gave you a hard time, didn’t I?

When you sent an essay-long explanation of how you liked me;

how scared you were of falling for me further, I think that’s where I lost it.

I am the writer, you’re more of a reader, I suppose

But how could you be so great with words that it pulled me deeper–

So deep it makes me yearn for you longer than I have known you.

In my point of view, I think we were too good to be true

How come you could match my energy, in every possible way?

I would spiral over the smallest thing and you were just there;

Always knowing what to say.

It was good while it lasted

And I don’t regret getting to know you, not at all

I’ll still listen to Hozier and to our collaborative playlist full of yearning

I’ll think of you every now and then,

With the hopes of bumping into you one day.

Even if what we shared was ephemeral,

I’ll remember how great it is to be known and loved by you

And how you quietly raised the bar for what I’ll ever settle for.

I’ll let the thoughts of maybes and what-ifs linger

Like maybe.. if the gap wasn’t too wide–

distance– and age-wise– maybe it

Would’ve worked, no?
