
Exploring deep within the forest, you suddenly come across an unusual sighting: a casque streaked and already weathering. Eventually, you realized it was a remnant of an ancient creature from the past. What would you do?
In a historical chance event, a local in Solana, Cagayan, discovered what was identified as a partial skull of an archaic Stegodon. Still intact with a complete set of teeth and two tusks, the million-year-old, heavily disfigured, and disconnected skull significantly fills the gap in the long-running quest of scientists in the fossil records of the Pleistocene epoch.
The epoch, which lasted from approximately 2.5 million to 11,700 years ago, cradles the genus Stegodon. This genus can be related to the extinct relatives of the modern elephants we know today, and finding one of its fossils is a one-in-a-million chance—something monumental.
Divided by islands, united by trunks
The findings of the discovery essentially added insight to studies about the population concentration and dispersal of the Stegodon species across the islands in and near Southeast Asia, where these creatures once inhabited and where the Wallace Line is situated.
The Wallace Line is a deep-water boundary in Southeast Asia that divides Asian and Australasian fauna, making any crossing of boundaries a sign of remarkable dispersal.
To compare, the new specimen, believed to be in its teenage stage of life, is taller than an average Filipino, and an adult Stegodon is relatively smaller than the modern-day Asian elephant. The specimen found is linked to match the Stegodon species found in Indonesia.
These comparisons suggest the way the newly discovered Philippine species had migrated into the country via island hopping, indicating how excellent swimmers they were. To further connect the dots, this implies a strong affinity that they match with the Wallacean Stegodon species of Indonesia as their closest relatives.
Shaping the PH paleontological landscape
The fossil is the first formally described Stegodon skull in the country, a breakthrough that gives scientists a glimpse into the country’s prehistoric wildlife.
Although Stegodon had been studied since the late 1800s only through isolated tusks and teeth, now, with the partial skull to examine, researchers can slowly crack how these ancient elephants once lived across the archipelago.
Intricate analyses show that the specimen’s intermediate size, narrow crown, and high ridge count set it apart from previously known forms, which suggests the possibility of a distinct insular lineage that evolved in isolation on Luzon.
Moreover, the study proposes that Luzon may have harbored at least three different forms of Stegodon: a large-bodied type, a smaller “dwarfed” type, and this new intermediate form, painting a more diverse picture of evolutionary history in the country.
This discovery not only gave the call to re-examine Stegodon fossils in the country but also to address chance discoveries. When chance fossil discoveries such as this occur, it is essential to contact local experts and institutions so the finds can be properly studied and preserved.
