Eala blanks Linette for Miami Open round of 16 ticket, moves closer to quarterfinal berth

Back to where her career’s seeds were sown, Alex Eala had constantly proved that her excellence is not an act but a habit.

Poised for another deep run, Eala brought out the brooms against Magda Linette, 6–3, 7–6(2), to move on the cusp of stepping into WTA 1000’s Miami Open quarterfinals as she booked a slot in the round of 16, held at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, March 22.

With the win, the Filipina tennis ace is two wins away from regaining her 390-point deduction at the said tilt due to the WTA’s 52-week rolling system, retaining her spot within the Top 30 or breaking closer to the coveted Top 20, placing herself near the chart of the world’s finest tennis players.

The lefty Filipina snapped a tight nip-and-tuck as both sides held their serves firm at 3-all, breaking the Polish serve in the eighth game to string three straight game points and draw first blood.

Just as fate seemed to smile on Eala as her backhand strikes fired off to a strong 2-love start in the second frame, clinching a match-high five straight games won in a row, Linette called for a medical timeout right after winning the third game.

That was when Eala’s tides seemed to be tamed.

The three-time WTA titlist flexed her veteran savvy as she dug deep, pressuring the 20-year-old Filipina with crosscourt hits and down-the-line flushes to take three games, including a break point in the fifth game, 4–5.

But Eala’s mettle proved to be unwavering in front of a supportive Filipino crowd.

The 2022 US Open junior girls’ singles champion rode her newfound tempo as she caught the Polish netter stranded at the net to kick off her comeback in style after sweeping the ninth game to level the match, 5-all.

Showcasing a gutsy fightback, Eala proved to be sharp in the clutch after sending pinpoint hits to Linette’s sideline to secure the 11th game.

Unwavering with grit, the world No. 29 Eala came up clutch when it mattered most, mounting on a  5–1 run and never looked back against the world No. 50 Linette who fell flat with missed chances, wrapping up the duel  in one hour and 51 minutes of action.

Eala’s efficiency on the second serve points allowed her to level the head-to-head sheet against Linette, now at two wins apiece after tallying a stout 76% (19-of-25) percentage.

Up next is Doha champion Karolina Muchova, as they will clash tomorrow at the same venue for a spot in the quarterfinals.
