The Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS) is set to solidify international trade ties with Japan following visits from multiple Japan-based executives to farms in Barangay Sto. Niño on Feb. 19.

These officials comprise Maria Alilia Maghirang, the agriculture representative of the Philippine Embassy in Japan, and the mango-importing firm, Wismettac Asian Foods, Inc., who were both guided by IGaCoS Mayor Lemuel “Toto” Reyes, who remains aligned with their initiatives.

“Japanese buyers expressed confidence in Samal mangoes, citing prior tasting experiences and describing the fruit as sweet, high-quality, and highly recommended for export,” the Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office XI aired in a press release, recognizing the transnational pride in Samal mangoes.

Intending to strengthen partnerships, the delegations focused on establishing the regulatory framework and standards for mango exports to Japan.

Part of these efforts, Wismettac Foods, Inc., assessed farms’ compliance with the Philippine Good Agricultural Practices (PhilGAP) and international certifications.

The organization also tapped into production methods and identified areas for improvement with its farm visits.

With this, the agency department highlighted that these bids would uplift farmers in commercializing their produce in accordance with external standards, and this collaboration would sustain long periods of advancement for Samal’s mango sector.

“With more than 2,700 hectares of mangoes planted in Samal, stakeholders remain optimistic that this collaboration will lead to formal agreements and long-term opportunities for local mango growers,” the agency said.
