Continuous rains threaten Davao region of flooding, landslides

Several communities across Davao Region remain at risk of flooding and landslides as heavy rains continue to affect parts of Mindanao, according to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB-Davao).

In a geohazard advisory released through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-Davao), authorities identified several barangays that may experience flooding, landslides, and mudflows based on the latest rainfall forecasts from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Among the areas being closely monitored are towns in Davao De Oro, including Mabinin, Maco, Maragusan, Mawab, Nabunturan, New Bataan, and Pantukan.

Authorities said continuous heavy rains may weaken slopes and cause landslides, especially in mountainous and low-lying areas.

“Possibile landslides and flooding. Please be alert and help monitor your area for possible landslides, floods, or mudflows,” the advisory said.

The bureau advised residents living near mountains, rivers, and drainage canals to stay alert as soaked soil could quickly trigger landslides or flashfloods.

Communities were also encouraged to watch for warning signs such as unusual ground movement, rising water levels, muddy floodwaters, cracked walls, tilted posts, and uneven floors.

‎“Stay alert for any signs of increase or decrease in flood levels, and watch over areas near rivers, slopes, or drainage canals,” the advisory added.

‎MGB-Davao said preparedness remains important as unstable weather persists across the region.

‎Residents were encouraged to know evacuation routes, identify safe areas, and follow instructions from barangay and local disaster officials.

‎Authorities also urged the public to use the government’s HazardHunterPH platform to check whether their communities are located in flood- or landslide-prone areas.

‎Local disaster risk reduction offices continue to monitor weather conditions.
