Eala outplays Grabher, advances to Linz Open round of 16

Filipinas tennis ace Alex Eala kicked off her clay-court season on a strong note, defeating hometown favorite Julia Grabher, 6–4, 6–3, to advance in the 2026 Ladies Linz Open round of 16 in Austria, April 8.

Currently ranked World No. 46, Eala struck her tournament debut in a good start after taking an early surge in the second set to seal an one-hour and 42-minute victory. 

Eala previously dropped from her career-high ranking of No. 29 following her tough round of 16 exit in the Miami run.

Deadlocked at 4-all, the left-handed Filipina grinded at crunch time in the opening set through consistent service plays to take the next two games and steal the set. 

Though Grabher showed some resistance in the second canto after slashing the 4–1 deficit to just one, the Filipina held firm and quickly regained control in the clay, winning the next two games en route to the win.

Eala capitalized on her foe’s miscues, as Grabher tallied 29 unforced errors compared to her 20, while also converting three out of seven break points compared to Grabher’s just one. 

The win propels the Filipina to a matchup against familiar rival Jelena Ostapenko for a potential quarterfinal spot.
