U17 Filipinas fall to DPR Korea in second AFC Women’s Asian Cup loss

Still reeling from a rusty start, the Philippines under-17 national team bowed to their second loss in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup as DPR Korea delivered a dominant 8–0 win at the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Center in China, May 5.

Following their opening loss against the Korea Republic, the Philippines suffered again at the hands of Koreans—this time to the North natives—as they slipped to a 0–2 slate while the latter earned Group C’s top seed with 2–0.

It was too much to handle for the young Filipinas’ defense holes, as it allowed the Koreans to mount a groove with Kim Won Sim’s hat-trick and orchestrate their second upset.

Ri Ui Gyong’s long left-footed chip broke the deadlock at the 30-minute mark before compatriot Eh Chong Gum doubled DPR Korea’s lead before halftime.

The Filipinas’ defense machinery further worsened as Sim put up a clinical head goal in the 54th eclipse and registered just another one five minutes later.

Writing the same narratives, Yu Jong Hyang and Ri Kyong Im blitzed past the Philippines’ backline to strike twin goals in the 67th and 69th minutes before Sim pocketed another goal to push the Koreans on advantage.

Song Won Yong delivered the dagger in the 84th to nab the dominant sayonara.

DPR Korea assured themselves a guaranteed next-round ticket after gaining six points regardless of the results of their remaining games in the fixture.

Hoping to bounce back from their back-to-back losses, the Philippines is set to redeem themselves against Chinese Taipei on May 8.
