DOTr to study 3 Mindanao airport relocation

In anticipation of a higher demand, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Aug. 26, their plans for the relocation of three Mindanao airports.

In a call for expression of interest, DOTr eyes investing a total value of P249.65 million for the feasibility studies of the proposed relocation project.

The new airports will be relocated in Zamboanga, Camiguin, and Surigao del Norte, aiming to widen the capacity for bigger planes and transport more passengers.

DOTr starts the rebidding of the detailed design of the New Zamboanga Airport at P92.51 million, planned to be built in Barangay Mercedes and Talabaan.

The said relocation is said to cater at least 1.99 million passengers by 2030 and 5.94 million by 2040, based on a 2018 feasibility study. 

On the other hand, DOTr allocates P79.63 million for the feasibility study of the relocation of the Camiguin Airport where the place of relocation is still in the selection process.

This project was initiated due to the sudden hike in air travel from 2022 to 2023.

Meanwhile, P77.51 million is allotted for the relocation of the Surigao Airport. 

This was initiated in preparation for the increasing number of tourists and the impending environmental and social risks of the expansion of the current airport.

The bidding for the projects closed on August 27, 2025.
