Eala advances to Sao Paulo Open quarterfinals with win over Julia Riera

Riding the momentum of her maiden WTA title, Alex Eala continued her impressive run on the professional circuit by defeating Argentina’s Julia Riera 6-1, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 Sao Paulo Open in Brazil, September 11.

The 20-year-old Filipina, seeded third in the tournament, dominated the opening set with ease, dropping only a single game.

In the second set, Riera, ranked 188th in the world, briefly surged ahead 2-1, but Eala quickly regained control, winning three consecutive games to establish a 4-2 lead.

Riera fought back to narrow the gap, yet Eala remained composed and closed out the match, securing her second victory against the Argentinian in their three career meetings.

On the stat sheet, Riera fired six aces and converted two of three break points, but Eala countered with steady returns, winning five of nine break opportunities despite finishing without an ace.

The win sets up a quarterfinal clash with Indonesia’s Janice Tjen on Saturday, September 13, a highly anticipated matchup between two of Southeast Asia’s top players.

Janice Tjen advanced to the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Martina Okalova.

Both are coming off breakthrough moments at the U.S. Open, where Eala became the first Filipina to claim a main-draw singles win and Tjen became the first Indonesian in 22 years to notch a main-draw victory.

Eala will be looking to extend her winning streak and build on her recent historic achievement at the Guadalajara WTA 125 event.
