Olympian gymnast Carlos Yulo and tennis superstar Alex Eala were feted as the Male and Female Athletes of the Year during the San Miguel Corporation – Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Annual Awards Night at the Diamond Hotel Manila, Feb 16.
The PSA recognized Yulo for sustaining world-class form following his historic two-gold medal finish at the Paris Games, while Eala was cited for her steady rise on the Women’s Tennis Association circuit last season.
Yulo claimed the organization’s highest individual award for the second straight year, further cementing his reputation as a pillar of Philippine gymnastics on the global stage.
Meanwhile, Eala captured the honor for the first time, underscoring both her personal breakthrough and the growing presence of Philippine tennis in elite international competitions.
Shortly after receiving the distinction, Eala carried her momentum into the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she eliminated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 32 to secure a Round of 16 showdown against Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea.
“This award meant so much to me because it’s a reflection of how far tennis has really come in our country,” Eala said in a video message from Dubai, as reported by Inquirer.net.
Staged annually, the PSA Awards Night paid tribute to Filipino athletes whose achievements elevated the country’s profile across the international sporting arena.
