The Department of Education (DepEd) has ordered the strict enforcement of safety protocols nationwide following a classroom shooting at Sta. Rosa Integrated School in Nueva Ecija, where an 18-year-old male student shot his grade 10 ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself last August 7.
In a statement issued on August 8, DepEd strongly condemned the incident as “appalling” and reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensure that schools remain sanctuaries of safety and learning.
Nueva Ecija Police Provincial Office Chief, Col. Heryl Bruno, described the event as a reminder of the importance of both physical security and attention to the emotional and psychological welfare of youth.
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the agency’s Child Protection Policy, which prohibits all learners and school personnel from committing acts of violence, abuse, and exploitation, and from bringing prohibited articles such as deadly weapons, drugs, alcohol, toxic substances, and pornographic materials into school premises.
He urged all regional offices to enforce stricter safety measures, including the screening of belongings upon entry, increasing security personnel visibility, and installing campus surveillance systems.
“DepEd urges all stakeholders to work together to ensure that schools remain safe, secure, and nurturing spaces for every learner,” said Angara.
He also called on school administrators to coordinate with local government units and police authorities for a comprehensive approach to campus safety.
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines urges increased investments in psychosocial support, mental health services, and emotional education within Philippine schools to ensure safer learning environments.
“We cannot treat these incidents as isolated tragedies,” ACT Chairperson Vladimer Quetua said. “We must confront the root causes of poverty and emotional neglect due to the lack of mental health care in schools,” he added.
