FALSE: Tacloban shooting suspects given scholarships by govt., says Usec. Castro

A Facebook post about the two teenage suspects of the fatal San Jose National High School shooting made rounds on social media, claiming that the government has given them full scholarships.

The post claims that the suspects were given another chance to study under a scholarship program, spearheaded by the Presidential Spokesperson Claire Castro. 

RATING: FALSE 

CONCLUSION:

The government did not grant the suspects any scholarships nor Usec. Castro gave statements, and they remain under custody. 

THE FACTS:

  • The two minor perpetrators remain in custody in Tanauan, Leyte. 
  • Usec. Castro did not give any statement in particular on the state of the suspects in recent weeks. 
  • The post uses an AI-generated image of the suspects in school uniform, with the image of Castro and the text claim plastered over it. 

THE BOTTOMLINE: 

The suspects were not given any scholarships, nor were they able to continue their studies, as they are still under the watchful observation of the government.
