
Filipina athlete Kram Airam Carpio captured the Philippines’ first gold medal during the 3rd Asian Youth Games after ruling the girls’ 51-55 kg pencak silat event at the Exhibition World Bahrain in Manama on Oct. 21.
Carpio, a native of Sta. Cruz, Laguna, overpowered Indonesia’s Qiken Dwi Tata Olifia, 33-19, in the final to clinch the country’s breakthrough victory.
The rising silat star also swept past Iran’s Nazaninfatemeh Kolasan, 36-22, and India’s Sakshi Thakur, 83-17, to reach the gold-medal round.
Carpio, a silver medalist at the Asian Pencak Silat Championships, thanked Filipino supporters and vowed to continue making the nation proud as more Filipino athletes from boxing, taekwondo, muay, mixed martial arts, and athletics compete in Bahrain.
The Asian Youth Games are still ongoing and will run from October 22 to 3.
