To All the Friends I’ve Loved Before

Kyla Edquilane

No one warns you that friendship breakups have their own muted kind of heartbreak. One day, you’re laughing with someone who feels like the soft light in your kitchen at dawn; the next, you’re relearning the shape of your days without the warmth of their shadow beside you. There is no blunt collision to replay, nor a final hug to fold into your memory like a keepsake. And maybe that’s why it cuts deeper: the ache hides in the hem of silence that rarely earns a place to grieve.

Lovers part in crescendos; friends drift apart in ellipses. Yet every grief — may it be romantic or platonic — deserves to be met where it waits. Closure finds its wings only when you look it in the eye, feel its stubborn weight, and let it fuse itself for a while into who you’re becoming. Only then does the wound loosen its grip and finally learn where to rest.

To the friend who grew distant over the years,

I’m still startled by how the world rearranged itself until we no longer recognized the silhouettes of who we once were. I blame the pockets of fate, yes — but somewhere in the cracks, I blame myself too, for not anchoring harder and letting the newness of life sweep me elsewhere.

I don’t think we fell apart because the friendship grew old; we did because we outgrew the people who once fit so effortlessly. Perhaps the universe, in some gentle twist, will someday braid our roads again… or shall we just accept this lifetime has written us only into its early chapters, not its last?

To the friend who became too heavy to hold,

I stretched myself thinner than I should have. I patched you up piece by piece, believing that to truly value a friend was to hold pieces of their hurt as if they were my own. I meant it when I said I would tip every drop of myself toward you — but the body cannot pour from a vessel that’s been emptied, and the soul cannot carry what constantly drains it.

Perhaps it wasn’t the friendship that needed breaking… perhaps it was my own peace demanding to be saved.

To the friend who crossed the line I couldn’t uncross,

Leaving you felt the most bewildering because the pain wasn’t inflicted on me. You were a good friend, only that the damage you’ve caused pierced through the bubble I inhabit.

Part of me wished you had wronged me personally so the verdict would’ve been simpler and sounder, but this universe isn’t always merciful with its clarity. And so I walked with the knowledge that it wasn’t the best choice at all — only the right one.

To the friend who left when I stopped doing everything,

Certain pains don’t bleed outward but bruise in the inner core. Yours was one of them. Even now, I catch myself wondering if I cared the wrong way or way too much. All I ever wanted was not for you to reciprocate my gesture but to know that I also mattered to you as a friend. I just wanted to belong, not to be a fixture you leaned on only when it pleases you.

We made memories I press like sun-drenched petals… yet they meant little to you. That awakening was a tear too deep to stitch back. Sometimes endings sting precisely because they are necessary.

To the friend who secretly turned me into a rival,

Did we truly become friends? Or were we two moths circling the same flame, dwelling to see who’d burn brighter? If it helps you breathe easier, know that I never once saw you as competition. I cheered for you, rooted for you, and held pride for you like genuine friends do.

A war only one wages cannot leave both unscathed. For the measure of what we are, I guess that stepping back is the kindest course we can offer to both ourselves and to each other.

To the friend whose one betrayal ended it all,

I remember, too vividly and cruelly, all the things you said and did behind my back. I wept more than I raged for betrayal hurts far more when it comes from someone you accepted into your life wholeheartedly. Worse, you broke not only the friendship we had but also my worldview of the new ones I treaded into, fearing that anyone I let close might follow the pattern I experienced with you.

You were the cradle of some of my happiest days, and the architect of a sorrow I still struggle to comprehend. The harm rang louder than my longing to stay — but I must admit that a delicate corner of my heart trembles under your touch, capable of tilting even with the slightest attempt of amends.

To the friend I lost in the unknown,

You are the echo that lingers the longest. The ghost that feels familiar but unreachable. Some days, I ain’t even aware of what we broke —  only that something slipped, and neither of us bent down to pick it up. I dream of scenarios where we apologized sooner, where we explained instead of conjectured, and where we had more time to untangle the knots before they choked us.

It feels like a book abandoned mid-sentence, with the plot unresolved and pages stiff with questions. Maybe that’s why I still keep it open in my mind… perhaps foolishly, perhaps hopefully.

To the friend I learned to live better without,

If you ever run into these words, I hope you leaf through them with receptive wisdom. Some connections end without villains, explosions, or even reason — ours end simply because one person thrives further without the other.

I bear no resentment… only the recognition that I am not down to share the same path with you anymore. Although this choice feels like a blind leap, I trust myself enough to follow where my solitude leads.

To the friend I accidentally loved,

It remains indistinct, the moment when affection arched over its boundaries to chance on something fraught. Perhaps it was the tender pull of your presence, or the way your laughter grazed the spaces I thought were mine alone. My heart fumbled to conceal it — clumsily, chillingly — because loving you was a claim I felt I had no right to make.

Is it a sin to love a friend more than one should? Or is the only wrongdoing in how I wrestled with myself, pretending it was not happening?

I’ve been taught only recently that not every bond is meant to ascend into romance, as much as the heart whispers for it. Some connections flourish best in the placid, unassuming beam of friendship, but this still does not dull the yearning. Something breaks either way — the friendship, or me.

To all the friends I’ve loved before — you’ve left traces in my life that I would forever cling to with heartfelt gratitude. May your journey take you to people who will cherish the gleam that I was fortunate enough to share in your rhythm. Should our paths intersect once more, let it be not as strangers pricked by the splinters of yesterday, but as tempered, more seasoned versions of the selves we used to be.

Some friendships prove worth risking, others worth releasing, and all of them worth learning from — but none of them, not a single one, is ever worth forgetting.
