The University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) has ordered student-athletes to leave campus dormitories indefinitely following a series of earthquakes and typhoons in Cebu, sparking criticism from students, parents, and coaches, Nov. 24.
According to the USPF’s official statement, it said that an Oct. 17 memorandum advised athletes to return to their homes “until further notice,” citing safety concerns and disruptions to face-to-face classes.
According to the university, the directive aimed to protect students from structurally compromised dormitories, though some affected athletes say they were not properly informed.
Several displaced athletes reportedly had to rely on coaches, friends, and temporary accommodations while juggling training and academic responsibilities.
Parents and students have criticized the timing and abruptness of the move, calling it “insensitive” amid ongoing recovery from natural disasters.
In response, USPF said the decision followed inspections that found the dormitories unsafe and unhygienic, and that alternative housing arrangements are underway.
The university also said transportation allowances were offered to athletes living far from campus, and an internal review is ongoing to address communication lapses.
Student-athletes raised concerns on social media about the evictions, prompting discussions on student welfare and administrative accountability.
University officials warned against misleading posts online and said legal action may be taken against those spreading false information.
The university has not yet announced a timeline for the completion of alternative housing or for the return of athletes to campus facilities.
