The Atin Ito coalition renewed its call for the government to declare July 12 as National West Philippine Sea (WPS) Victory Day during a symbolic sea action by hundreds of fisherfolk in Subic, Zambales, on the morning of July 5.
The maritime drive was initiated as part of the week-long commemoration ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Philippines’ landmark arbitral victory in 2016.
Rafaela David, the Atin Ito co-convenor, called on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to issue the declaration through an executive order.
“July 12 is more than a date in our history, it is a reminder that truth, international law, and the courage of the Filipino people prevailed,” David said.
She also emphasized the importance of honoring one of the country’s most important diplomatic victories while fisherfolk and security forces continue to defend the nation’s maritime rights.
“Declaring it as National West Philippine Sea Victory Day will help preserve this victory in our national memory, strengthen public awareness and education, and ensure that future generations are equipped to reject disinformation and defend what is rightfully ours,” David added.
Leaders from the New Masinloc Fishermen Association, along with the Subic Commercial Fishers Association, and the Samahan ng Cabangaan-3 Fishermen’s Unity, reminded attendees of the ongoing territorial conflict against China’s claim on the WPS.
“Ang tagumpay sa arbitral ruling ay mahalaga, ngunit hindi pa tapos ang laban. Hanggang patuloy ang panghihimasok at agresyon ng Tsina sa ating karagatan, patuloy din tayong maninindigan at lalaban para sa ating karapatan,” New Masinloc President Leonardo “Ka Nards” Cuaresma said.
With about 250 volunteers deploying nearly 80 boats, the maritime parade formed the colors of the Philippine Flag alongside the message “WPS, ATIN ITO!”
In 2016, the Philippines won its landmark case against China at an international arbitration tribunal in The Hague, which ruled that Beijing had “no legal basis” for its expansive claims over the West Philippine Sea.
