Angara leads DepEd, PSC push to overhaul 100 school sports facilities nationwide

Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara unveiled the agency’s long-term sports development agenda in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) during a post-game interview.

In an exclusive interview, Angara emphasized DepEd’s push, with the PSC, to strengthen grassroots sports programs and improve school athletic facilities.

“Gagawa tayo ng mga sports clubs, ie-encourage natin. And then may partnership tayo with the Philippine Sports Commission to upgrade facilities of at least 100 schools,” he stated.

Angara also said that DepEd’s shift to a three-term school calendar for School Year 2026-2027 is expected to create more opportunities for extracurricular and sporting activities for learners.

“Tapos yung three-term year natin will also give time for more extracurricular activities,” he added.

The commitment came following the PSC’s historic first-ever P10 million cash pledge for Palarong Pambansa medal-winning student-athletes during the opening ceremony.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. likewise revealed that the government had distributed sports equipment and supplies to more than 6,000 schools from 2022 to 2025 to help improve the training of youth athletes.

These planned initiatives reinforce the PSC’s “Grassroots to Gold, Gold to Greatness” vision, which nurtures aspiring athletes to be ready not only on the national stage but also on the global stage.
