Heavy rains drenched the final day of competition at the Xi’an Physical Education University Softball Stadium in China, forcing organizers to cancel the medal matches, including the bronze showdown between the Blu Girls and Chinese Taipei.
The weather eventually rendered the field unplayable, halting any chance for the Philippines to fight for the last World Cup berth.
With the tournament abruptly concluded, final standings from the elimination round were used to determine World Cup qualifiers. Japan (9-0), China (8-1), and Chinese Taipei (7-2) secured the top three spots and the coveted tickets to the 2026 Women’s Softball World Cup.
The Blu Girls, who finished fourth with a 6-3 record, were left on the outside looking in. Their three losses came against the tournament’s top teams: Japan (9-1), China (2-1), and Chinese Taipei (3-0), despite convincing wins over Thailand (15-1), Korea (7-0), India (15-0), Malaysia (14-0), Singapore (13-0), and Hong Kong (12-0).
Though the cancellation cost the team a shot at their third World Cup appearance, the national squad secured qualification to the 2026 Asian Games, where they’ll have another opportunity to represent the country.
Now, all eyes turn to Hangzhou, where the Philippine softball squad will look to turn missed chances into golden ones.
