Cortis AUs took over our FYP and made us yearn more

You might have heard their songs without realizing it. Maybe “What You Want” played on your feed, or maybe you even joined the “FaSHioN” dance trend on TikTok. 

However, for some people who browse social media, CORTIS is more than just the name of a popular K-pop boy band.

Getting to know CORTIS

CORTIS is BIGHIT MUSIC’s five-member boy group composed of Martin, James, Juhoon, Seonghyeon, and Keonho. The group’s name comes from the phrase “COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES,” reflecting their desire to explore beyond the usual boundaries. 

More than performers, the members are presented as young creators who excel in songwriting, composition, and choreography. CORTIS officially debuted on August 18, 2025, with “What You Want,” the lead single from their first EP, which features tracks such as “GO!,” “FaSHioN,” “JoyRide,” and “Lullaby.” 

But while their music continues to introduce them to new listeners, another corner of the internet has found a different way to make CORTIS part of their everyday lives: by turning the members into characters in AUs. 

When fiction feels like reality

AU, short for “alternative universe,” is a form of fan-created storytelling that places real people or fictional characters into an entirely different setting, personality, relationship, or storyline. 

Instead of seeing an idol as simply an idol, readers might encounter them as a classmate, childhood best friend, brother, campus crush, stranger on the train, or even someone they meet through a completely fictional universe.

And on TikTok, these stories have found the perfect home.

An AU can be as simple as a series of screenshots, text messages, tweets, photos, or short videos accompanied by a storyline. Some are written through multiple parts, while others are oneshots—short, self-contained stories that give readers a complete beginning, conflict, and ending in just a few slides. 

The format is engaging, easy to follow, and more importantly, easy to imagine yourself inside. That may be why CORTIS AUs have become a familiar sight on some users’ For You Pages.

You might find something comforting in reading about a fictional character who remembers your favorite order, waits for you after class, sends a goodnight message, or looks at you as if you are the only person in the room, or captures the uncertainty of a situationship. In a world where romance can feel complicated, an AU offers a version of love that is carefully written, perfectly timed, and tailored to the reader’s imagination.

Some read for the kilig. Others read because they relate to the characters. While there are ones simply wanting to escape reality for a few minutes.

For readers, the attraction to these stories goes beyond the idols themselves—it is often the emotions and experiences that the story brings to life. They may see reflections of their own lives in the characters or simply immerse themselves in a story they wish they could be part of.

One swipe can introduce you to a new storyline. Another can reveal a plot twist. Suddenly, you are already searching for Part 2 at midnight, adding the post to your favorites, checking the creator’s account for updates, or commenting for a happy ending.

The experience almost feels like watching a romance unfold in real time but with the reader imagining everything beyond the words.

Giving CORTIS another life 

CORTIS, in particular, has become an interesting canvas for this kind of storytelling. As a relatively young group with a growing catalog and a strong visual identity, their members can easily be reimagined into different fictional worlds. Their real-life personalities and public images become starting points, while creators build entirely new characters around them.

The result is a strange but fascinating crossover between music and storytelling: You can discover CORTIS through a song, then discover them again through a fictional character.

It also says something about how fandom has evolved. Being a fan is no longer limited to listening to music, watching performances, or collecting photocards. Online communities now create entire narratives around the artists they love. 

A song can become a soundtrack; a photo can become a character reference; and a few lines of dialogue can turn an idol into the protagonist of someone’s imaginary love story.

Of course, an AU is still fiction. The characters in these stories are interpretations created by fans, not representations of the actual members or their private lives. But that distinction does not make the emotions readers experience any less real.

Because perhaps that is the real reason people keep coming back.

Sometimes, people read AUs not because they believe the story could happen, but because, for a few minutes, they want to believe that someone would choose them, wait for them, understand them, and love them the way they hope to be loved. 

At some point, CORTIS becomes more than something we listen to. Just like their name, they add color to the lives of many, reminding us that even the things we once only imagined can make life feel a little more alive.
