
Speedcubers from across the Philippines, alongside foreign contenders, battled for victory at the Robinsons Dasmariñas for the 12th Cavite Speedcubing Open on Oct. 4.
The event, sanctioned by the World Cube Association (WCA), showcased several speedcubers who exploded with outstanding performances from the 3x3x3 cube, 3x3x3 one-handed, 2x2x2 cube, 5x5x5 cube, 7x7x7 cube, pyraminx, skewb, and square-1 categories.
Speedcubers share podium in 3x3x3 events
Aragon Martin Gonzales emerged victorious in both 3x3x3 cube and 3x3x3 one-handed events, maintaining an average of 7.02 and 10.63 seconds, and best single times of 6.28 and 10.03 seconds, respectively.
Meanwhile, Robbie Villarica finished second in both competitions with a best of 6.69 seconds and an average of 7.37 seconds for the classic 3x3x3; while clocking a 15.42 average and best single-solve of 13.08 seconds with one hand.
Prodigy Juan Miguel ‘UNO’ Magallanes secured bronze at the first 3x3x3 event after an 8.00-second average and best finish of 6.10, and another for the one-handed battle with a best single of 13.91 alongside a 16.31-second five-round average.
UNO tops 2x2x2 category, 3x3x3 fellows bow
Magallanes ruled the 2x2x2 cube competition after recording a best single-solve of 1.22 seconds and a 1.59-second average.
3x3x3 champion Gonzales fell as runner-up with an average of 2.02 and a single best of 1.81 seconds.
Villarica trailed behind the two as the third placer, clocking a speed of 1.63 seconds for his best single-solve, with a 2.85-second average.
Palisoc outpaces contenders for top 5x5x5, 7x7x7 finishes
Inigo Miguel Palisoc outperformed the rest of his competition twice at the 5x5x5 and 7x7x7 cube categories, with a quick 38.09 best single-solve and 43.02-second average for the former event; while finishing a 2:01.68 best, and an average of 2:05.24 solves at the latter.
Nigerian competitor Ayooluwa Samuel Dada claimed bronze on both tilts, clocking in a 50.49-second best finish and 58.33 average for the 5x5x5 category.
Dada then set a new national record for the 7x7x7 cube competition with 2:24.92 minutes for his three-round average, and a 2:20.05 best single-solve.
Consistent Villarica also bagged a 5x5x5 silver with a best finish of 50.08, and a 56.74 average on three solves.
Dave Palmares finished as the runner-up in the 7x7x7 cube, notching a best finish of 2:18.81 and a consistent pace of 2:20.47 minutes.
Gonzales topples Padua Brothers in Pyraminx
Gonzales showed no remorse after defeating brothers Chris and Ian Padua at once at the Pyraminx competition after the champion posted a 1.99 best cube and an average of 2.65 seconds in five rounds.
Chris, despite having a better 1.59-second best finish than Gonzales, fell short with a 2.75-second average while Ian took longer with 3.97 seconds for his average solve and a 2.59-second best single-solve.
Carlos triumphs with top Skewb record
Kenneth Carlos struck the Skewb championship after recording a 3.27 best finish, close to his 3.47-second average.
World Cube Association delegate Yuji Yoshida finished second with an average of 4.77 seconds, while tallying 4.02 seconds for his best single-solve.
Multi-time winner Gonzales squeezed his way to the podium once again after concluding at bronze with a best single-solve of 3.39 seconds, but lagged behind after marking a 5.05-second average.
Merced sets national record for square-1
Francis Yuel Merced eclipsed the other competitors for square-1, setting a new national record of 8.97 seconds for average times and posting 8.03-second best solve.
Jose Polorhenzo Aquino had an impressive 6.98-second best finish, but was outdone for the rest of the five solves at 9.48 as his average time.
Yoshida barely succeeded for third place after a 15.34-second average time, and clocking a 12.05 best time.
The next local speedcubing event sanctioned by WCA will be the Makati Speedcubing Open V on Oct. 12.
