Eala cruises into Indian Wells round of 16 following injury retirement by Gauff

Alex Eala advanced to the round of 16 of the BNP Paribas Open after Coco Gauff retired with a left arm injury while trailing 6–2, 2–0 during their round of 32 match at Indian Wells, California, March 8.

The 20-year-old Filipina controlled the tempo from the start, using sharp crosscourt forehands and well-timed drop shots to push the world No. 4 out of position.

Gauff first showed signs of discomfort in the second game of the opening set and struggled to find her rhythm on serve, committing seven double faults in the frame.

Eala seized control in the sixth game after rallying from a 0–40 deficit on Gauff’s serve to secure a crucial break that gave her a 4–2 lead.

Trailing 5–2, Gauff called for a medical timeout and returned with her lower left arm heavily strapped before attempting to continue the match.

Eala then broke serve to open the second set and held for a 2–0 advantage before Gauff decided to retire after 54 minutes of play.

The Filipina finished with a 68% first-serve rate, converted five of six break-point chances, and did not commit a single double fault.

“I really didn’t want to win this way, but it’s still a big moment for me to play on Stadium One and compete against such a great player,” Eala said, as reported by Inquirer.net.

Eala will next face Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova for a place in the quarterfinals on March 11 (Philippine time).
