Everything you need to know for the September 21 protests

On Sunday, the 53rd anniversary of the declaration of martial law by former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., mass protests will commence as part of a nationwide anti-corruption movement. In Metro Manila, two main rallies will occur at the Luneta Park and EDSA People Power Monument respectively. 

Here’s everything you need to know, bring, and expect ahead of the demonstrations, especially if it’s your first time going.

Rally Schedule and March Route

The protest actions are planned as a “twin rally” in two main locations: Luneta Park and the EDSA People Power Monument.

• Morning Rally (Luneta Park): The main protest at Luneta Park, dubbed “Baha sa Luneta: Aksyon na Laban sa Korapsyon,” is scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM. This event is primarily organized by student and activist groups.The program is expected to feature speeches and performances, and is projected to end around 1:00 PM.
• Afternoon March (EDSA People Power Monument): A separate but related rally, the “Trillion Peso March,” will commence at 2:00 PM at the EDSA People Power Monument. This gathering is led by church leaders and various civil society groups.
• Local Mobilizations: Prior to the main event at Luneta, different groups will also be converging from various points in Metro Manila. For example, some student groups are expected to march from the Philippine General Hospital along Taft Avenue to T.M. Kalaw Avenue and then to Luneta Park by 8:00 AM. Other groups will be coming from Baclaran Church and Mall of Asia.

Things to Expect

• Large Crowds: Thousands of people from various sectors—including students, activists, church groups, and other community organizations—are expected to participate. The atmosphere will likely be energetic, with attendees chanting, holding placards, and using noise-making instruments.
• Diverse Participants: The rally will be a mix of people of all ages and from different backgrounds, united by a common cause.
• Programs and Performances: The main program will feature speeches from organizers and notable personalities, as well as performances from various groups.
• Police and MMDA Presence: A heavy presence of law enforcement and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel will be present. 
• Potential Traffic Disruption: With a large number of people converging in the area, traffic in and around Luneta Park and EDSA is likely to be affected.
