Gabriela secures House seat as 64th winning party-list — Comelec

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed the Gabriela Women’s Party as the 64th winning party-list in the House of Representatives on September 14.

Comelec chair George Erwin Garcia confirmed the entry of Gabriela during a radio interview with dzMM, naming Sarah Elago as its representative.

“Actually kung hindi tayo nagkakamali, officially ko nang babanggitin sa inyo, mukhang Gabriela party-list po yun,” Garcia said.

“Masasabi ko na sure na yun… Dito ko sa inyong programa unang nabanggit pero mas maganda pong nasasabi na natin upang mawala na yung agam-agam,” he added.

Garcia explained that the recognition of Gabriela complies with the constitutional requirement that party-list representatives should comprise 20 percent of the total membership of the House of Representatives.

Article VI, Section 5(2) of the 1987 Constitution states that one-half of the House’s membership shall be filled by party-list representatives from the labor, peasant, urban poor, indigenous cultural communities, women, youth, and other sectors provided by law.

Based on Comelec’s review, 63 party-list representatives accounted for only 19.8 percent of the chamber, prompting the addition of Gabriela to raise the allocation to 20.4 percent.

Garcia noted, however, that the en banc still has to formally decide on Gabriela’s admission to the House of Representatives.

During the 2025 midterm elections, Gabriela obtained 256,811 votes.

The formal proclamation of the group is tentatively scheduled on September 18.
