HISTORIC FIRST: PSC gives P10M in cash incentives to Palaro medalists

For the first time in history, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is granting P10 million in cash incentives to student-athlete medalists.

The milestone incentive was announced through a video message from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. during the opening ceremony of the 66th edition of Palarong Pambansa 2026 at the Datu Lipus Makapandong DO Plaza Sports Complex, May 24.

“Sa una-unahang pagkakataon, maglalaan ang Philippine Sports Commission ng mga incentive para sa mga medalista sa regular sports at sa para-games bilang pagkikilala sa inyong husay,” the President said to the delegates.

Under the incentive scheme, gold medalists will receive P5,000, while silver and bronze winners will be awarded P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

The P10 million cheque was turned over from PSC Chairman John Patrick Gregorio to Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara.

Special Assistant to the President Antonio Ernesto Lagdameo Jr., who spoke on behalf of the President’s keynote address, said the government continues to strengthen school sports clubs nationwide as a key avenue for students’ participation in physical activities.

Lagdameo added the partnership between the Department of Education and PSC through the “Grassroots to Goal” program aims to support young Filipino athletes from the school level up to higher levels of competition.

“Upang masuportaan ang mga batang atletang Pilipino mula sa paaralan hanggang sa mas mataas na antas ng paligsahan,” Lagdameo said. “Nakikita na natin ang bunga ng mga pagsisikap na ito.”

Aside from the historic financial boost, the opening ceremony showcased an airborne exhibition by the Philippine Army Parachutist Team, a vibrant parade of colors, a dazzling drone show, and a special performance from OPM singer Rico Blanco and other performers.

Olympic medalist and weightlifting tournament director Hidilyn Diaz also presided over the oath-taking of the officiating officials.

Marking Agusan del Sur’s first time hosting the annual national sports competition, over 13,000 delegates from 18 regions, including NAS and PSO, are vying for medals from May 24 to 31.
