Janelle Frayna clinches Abu Dhabi blitz crown, marks new milestone for Philippine chess

Janelle Mae Frayna, the Philippines’ first Woman Grandmaster, swept the ladies’ blitz crown during the 31st Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival, slicing through 120 opponents from 24 countries with a flawless eight-point score.

The 29-year-old Bicolana opened her campaign like a well-rehearsed gambit, stringing together seven straight wins before steering the final two games into calculated draws, one of them the title-clincher against Uzbek IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova.

It was her debut in the Abu Dhabi arena, yet she handled the nine-round sprint with the cool precision of an endgame specialist, never yielding even a single point.

Fellow Filipina and Olympiad mainstay Ruelle Canino finished in the 24th bracket with 5.5 points, holding her own in the congested middle of the field.

For Frayna, the victory is another sharp stroke in a career defined by historic lines: earning her WGM title in 2017, bagging SEA Games bronze in women’s rapid and blitz in 2021, and now adding an unbeaten blitz crown abroad.

Her rise began at 20, when she clinched her final WGM norm at the 2016 Baku Olympiad with a tense, must-hold draw that sealed her as the Philippines’ trailblazing queen of the board.

That ascent has been anything but straightforward. Once cut from the FEU chess roster, she recalculated, rebuilt her position, and went on to secure national championships, ASEAN age-group titles, and international respect.

A cum laude Psychology graduate from Far Eastern University and an enlisted Private First Class in the Philippine Army, Frayna has blended academic discipline, military rigor, and tournament steel into a formidable competitive arsenal.

In her post on August 17, she thanked overseas Filipinos for their support, calling Abu Dhabi “one tough tournament” but one she met, as always, with the resolve to “give my best.”
