Samal attracts Malay links after power supply upgrade

Following a massive boost in electricity supply, Mayor Lemuel “Toto” Reyes revealed investment interests from a Malaysian organization in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS) on April 21, 2026. 

The agency is set to establish a halal hub in the area, boosting international connections. 

“I already submitted the proposal to them, and we hope they can put up the halal facility here,” Reyes aired in an interview with the Philippine News Agency. 

With the 50-megawatt submarine cable in place for a more stable and cost-effective electric power supply, future commercial links are expected to be within sight. 

Reyes also noted that with this adjustment, investors are expected to share the same insight.

Vice Mayor Richard Guindolman also resonated with the foresight, noting that stable power is key to inviting investors.

Beyond these prospects, Samal residents are also expected to have improved feedback on the flow of electricity.

According to Reyes, a resident shared that electricity bills dropped from P31,000 under the former provider to P16,000 with Davao Light and Power Co. (DLPC), the new power supplier.

Samal is progressively working on these improvements to boost the tourism sector as well.
