Scottie Scheffler cruises to British Open glory, eyes historic major sweep

Scottie Scheffler delivered a clinical performance at Royal Portrush on Sunday, July 20 (Monday, July 21, 12:15 AM PHT), closing with a composed 3-under-par 68 to seize his first British Open title and fourth career major.

The world No. 1 set the tone from the first tee, curling in a birdie on the opening hole and building a commanding seven-shot cushion before the turn.

A double bogey on the par-4 8th briefly disrupted his rhythm, but Scheffler responded with a birdie at the 9th to restore control.

From there, it was all business: a string of steely pars on the back nine, a textbook birdie on 12, and a cold-blooded walk up 18 with the Claret Jug firmly in sight.

Harris English lit up the final round with a 66 to snatch solo second, but the gap to Scheffler was never truly threatened.

The chasing pack: McIlroy, Fitzpatrick, and Lowry floated in Scheffler’s rearview mirror, unable to disrupt his grip on the leaderboard.

With the win, Scheffler now owns the Masters (2022, 2024), the PGA Championship (2025), and the Open Championship — leaving only the U.S. Open to complete the sweep of golf’s four majors.

Rory McIlroy, himself a four-time major winner, dubbed Scheffler “the bar we’re all trying to get to.”

Scheffler’s bounce-back rate, an elite 34.8%, the highest on Tour this season, proved decisive once again after his mid-round stumble.

After holing out for the win, Scheffler shared a rare, emotional moment with wife Meredith and their infant son Bennett beside the 18th green.

In a field stacked with talent, Scheffler has established himself as a steady force, now with four majors at 28 and the U.S. Open still in play.
