The Philippine U15 baseball team, The Dreamers, held off Hong Kong, 3-2 as Kristoffer Agojo’s clutch play sealed their second win in the group phase of U-15 Asian Baseball Championship in Tainan, Taiwan, August 15.
With the score tied at 2-2 and two outs in the seventh inning, Hong Kong’s shortstop committed a costly fielding error that allowed Agojo to score the game winning run from second base to lift the Philippines to a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Down to their last two outs, Agojo kept the Philippines alive with a single to center field. Hong Kong’s defense then attempted two pickoffs before pitcher Chai Andes threw a wild pitch that advanced Agojo to second base, forcing the Hong Kong coach to call for a timeout.
Hong Kong’s strategy was to intentionally walk Charles Monterey, putting him on first base. However, Vispo Arken followed with a hit that led to a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing the Philippines to clinch the win.
David Weiss Jr. and Andes scored two runs for Hong Kong, while the Filipinos countered with one run each from Monterey, Arken, and Agojo.
Before this triumph, the Philippines logged their first win with an 11-1 rout of Sri Lanka.
The Dreamers now advance to the Super Round, where they will face powerhouse Japan on Aug. 19 at 1:30 PM (Philippine time).
