
Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili—Ateneo de Manila University’s up-and-coming student-athletes—passed away after a tragic drowning accident on Monday, June 8.
In an official statement, the university confirmed the passing of the two student-athletes after a drowning incident during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
“The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time.”
Baterbonia was 19, while Adili was 21.
Baterbonia recently represented the Davao Region in the Palarong Pambansa 2026, where he helped his team capture the silver medal. He was expected to suit up for the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 89.
Meanwhile, Adili made his UAAP debut in Season 88, averaging 8.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists to bolster Ateneo’s frontcourt.
The sports community extended its support and condolences to their families and loved ones as they grieve the loss of both players.
