DOST urges science-based flood control programs

In response to the current flooding in Metro Manila, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasizes the need for science-based approaches in the implementation of flood control programs in the country.

Through the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week celebration forum conducted on September 3, Solidum offers tailored interventions for flood control projects through geological evaluations.

“DOST can provide the science and technology to make sure that these things are mapped well and the data are used in planning,” he said.

Moreover, Solidum assures the availability of DOST in providing digital models and forecasting tools in assessing the current needs of rivers and drainage systems and conducting further studies thereof.

“Our message is that we have existing data that they can use to prepare the flood control projects. Use science for infrastructure since the data is already available online,” he added.

The DOST secretary challenges relevant people to think about the effects of the current flood control projects on the next flood, citing its importance as a key factor in the design process.

According to Solidum, DOST is not part of any flood control project planning and implementation, but the agency is open for recommendations and consultations for the improvement of the project.
