Student Beep cards with 50% discount, publicly available on September 15

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Tuesday announced the availability of student-personalized beep cards, automatically containing the 50 percent fare discount for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 lines, starting September 15.

This action is in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directives, through former DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon, to make public transportation accessible and efficient to students, from kindergarten to graduate school, along with learners from the Alternative Learning System (ALS) and Special Education (SPED).

“Well, upon directive ni [DOTr] Secretary Vince [Dizon] at ni Presidente, for as long as student ka, regardless kung anong level, i-cover na namin,” MRT-3 General Manager Mike Capati said via ABS-CBN News.

Moreover, Capati emphasized that the student Beep card is exclusively bought on the train lines, highlighting its personalized feature compared to the previous Beep cards.

The personalized Beep card will have no daily limits and will enable students to cut long queues for discounted-priced tickets.

Acquisition of the beep card includes presenting a valid school ID or enrollment details for the current school year.

After the prerequisite, a personalized card will be issued on the spot, contrary to the five working days of processing experienced in availing the previous Beep card.

The student Beep cards have a validity of one year, renewable every new school year with the same requirements.

The move to increase the fare discount from 20 to 50 percent began in June with the aim of helping ease the financial burden on students.
