Eala misses quarterfinal berth in Miami Open round of 16

Just for Alex Eala to replicate her last year’s Miami Open valiant run, her Czech foe stood in her way and denied her the chance.

A victory would have sent Eala into the quarterfinals, but instead suffered a 6–0, 6–2, heartbreak against Karolina Muchova, ultimately bowing out in the round of 16 of the 2026 Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, March 24. 

The defeat ended the world No. 29’s impressive run, entering the match with strong momentum and a chance to grasp her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

It also marked the heavy loss that knocked the 20-year-old Filipina standout out of the tournament where she broke through with a wild card last year, beating several seasoned players before reaching the semifinals.

The world No. 14 Muchova asserted control early, dominating the opening set with precise shot-making, forcing Eala into multiple errors en route to a 6–0 rout.

Eala showed brief resistance in the second set with improved rallies and more aggressive play, but the Qatar Open champ maintained her composure to seal the match.

“I’m still really happy about this week… of course leaving the court today a little disappointed, which is normal, but overall, very happy with my performance this week,” Eala said, staying optimistic about her campaign. 

Prior to reaching the round of 16, Eala had beaten world No. 50 Magda Linette and world No. 53 Laura Siegemund in the rounds of 32 and 64, respectively.

Eala will take a few days off before resuming training ahead of her clay-court campaign, with her next stop in Austria for the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, scheduled on April 6.
