Fresh off her WTA title in Guadalajara, Alex Eala carried her momentum across continents, dispatching French qualifier Yasmine Mansouri, 6-0, 6-2, in the round of 32 of the Sao Paulo Open, September 10.

The 20-year-old Filipina ace, seeded third in the WTA 250 tournament, needed just 1 hour, 10 minutes to book her spot in the round of 16.

The victory came only three days after her breakthrough run at a WTA 125 event in Mexico, marking a swift turnaround in her rising career.

Now ranked No. 61 in the world, Eala was in full command from the start, sweeping the first set in just over half an hour.

Mansouri threatened briefly in the second set, pulling within 3-1 and later 4-2. But Eala’s consistent baseline game and timely shot-making proved too strong, closing out the match in straight sets.

The Filipina held firm in a critical third game of the opening set, surviving a deuce before breaking Mansouri in the next game after four deuces.

Eala showed efficiency under pressure, saving all four break points she faced. Mansouri, by contrast, was broken five times in 10 chances. The Filipina also limited her miscues to four double faults, compared with seven for the Frenchwoman.

The Sao Paulo Open returned to the WTA Tour this year after a 25-year hiatus, adding historical weight to Eala’s debut.

Before the main draw began, players outside the direct acceptance cutoff went through a qualification round to secure their spots.

The qualifying stage is a standard feature in WTA Tour events like the Sao Paulo Open, allowing lower-ranked competitors to earn entry into the 32-player main draw. It was through this path that Mansouri, ranked outside the top tier, advanced to face Eala in the opening round.

Alex Eala will face Argentina’s Julia Riera in the round of 16. The Filipina previously met Riera at the ITF W36A tournament, where she scored a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
