Eala’s historic Wimbledon run ends in round of 16 loss to Paolini

After pulling off the tournament’s biggest upset of the Wimbledon Championships by prevailing over the defending champion Iga Swiatek, Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala saw her historic Wimbledon campaign come to an end after falling to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, 4–6, 6–4, 3–6, in the Round of 16 of the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club in London, July 6.

Eala entered the match with confidence after defeating Paolini, 6–1, 7-6(5) in the round of 32 of Dubai Duty Free Championships earlier this year. 

This time, however, the Italian turned the tables in a grueling three-set encounter. 

Eala struggled by a series of unforced errors mainly off her backhand, giving Paolini advantage to capture the first set.

Eala came out strong after the first set set-back by Paolini, as she earned a key break to even the match at one set each.

Yet, Paolini remained solid through the end to close out the third set, securing a 3–6 triumph over Eala to end her Wimbledon run.

During her post-match press conference, Eala reflected on her experience after her round of 16 exit at Wimbledon. 

“It was a really challenging match today. I think Jasmine played great. I gave everything that I could. I did everything that I could today, so I’m proud of that. I have to be proud of what I’ve achieved this week. Leaving with positive thoughts,” Eala said.

Although her Wimbledon run ended in the round of 16, Eala leaves London with renewed confidence, valuable experience, and another historic milestone for Philippine tennis as she shifts her focus to the remainder of the season.
