Eldrew Yulo caps Cairo tilt with 2 bronzes despite ankle injury

Karl Eldrew Yulo capped his campaign in the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Cairo leg with two bronze medals, competing through a nagging right ankle injury that limited his routines in the finals, April 6.

The 18-year-old Filipino gymnast first claimed bronze in the floor exercise final after posting a score of 14.000, finishing behind Bulgaria’s Daniel Marinov (14.233) and Arsenii Dukhno (14.133).

Yulo followed it up with another podium finish in the horizontal bar final, scoring 13.733 to secure his second bronze of the tournament.

Despite the results, Yulo admitted in an interview with ABS-CBN his performance was affected by a lingering right ankle injury that has troubled him since late last year, particularly during landings.

Still, the younger brother of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo delivered under pressure, showing composure in both apparatus finals to secure back-to-back podium finishes.

In the horizontal bar, he faced a competitive field led by China’s Li Hongyan, who took gold with 14.400, while Cyprus’ Marios Georgiou settled for silver with 13.900.

Despite the setback, Yulo’s double-bronze finish underscores his resilience and potential as he continues to gain experience at the senior level.

He is set to compete in the next World Cup leg in Croatia on April 9–12, although he is expected to skip the vault event as part of his recovery management.
