FALSE: PBBM asks for another 6-year term as President

Several circulating posts on Facebook show an art card saying that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is wishing to have another six-year term as the President of the Philippines, because his current six-year term is not enough to solve all of the country’s problems and issues.

CLAIM

President Marcos is asking to extend his current six-year term as the President of the Philippines to solve all of the country’s problems.

RATING: FALSE

CONCLUSION

There are no verified and released statements, interviews, or confirmation that President Marcos will seek another six-year term as President of the Philippines.

THE FACTS

  • Article VII, Section 4 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution states that “the President shall not be eligible for any re-election.” This obviously and directly bars President Marcos from seeking re-election as President.
  • A two-part fact-check post from Probe reveals that some of President Marcos’ claims during his latest State of the Nation Address (SONA) speech last July were deemed misleading, false or inconsistent. This includes issues on labor and employment, migrant workers, foreign affairs, infrastructures, technology, agriculture, healthcare, and social welfare. This contradicts what the art card says: “Sa dami na ng nasolusyonan kong problema sa bansa, kulang ang anim na taon.
  • The circulating posts were posted on TEAM SARA DUTERTE Facebook group, quickly garnering a majority of ‘Haha’ and ‘Angry’ reactions and strong comments slamming Marcos’ presidency and administration. Marcos and Duterte are currently on a political rift after their successful UniTeam bid as President and Vice President.

THE BOTTOMLINE

President Marcos did not make any statements asking for another term as President. A provision in the 1987 Philippine Constitution prohibits it as well.
